WHEREAS, the Day of "Self" Discovery will be held on May 18, 2017 at Rodef Shalom in Oakland; and,
WHEREAS, the Day of "Self" Discovery is a daylong celebration of, for, and by people on their own personal road of recovery; and,
WHEREAS, 1 in 5 Americans lives with a mental illness. The Day of "Self" Discovery serves as a reminder that these individuals are more than their diagnosis. They are people, people with hopes and dreams and aspirations; and,
WHEREAS, annually held in May, The Day of "Self" Discovery is a part of Mental Health Awareness Month. This year, for the 17th annual celebration, the theme of the day is "Resiliency and Wellness: Feeding Your Soul;" and,
WHEREAS, workshops will include topics such as eating and preparing healthy foods, dance, music, art, yoga, meditation, diabetes education, health living, and more; and,
WHEREAS, additionally, it is during the Day of "Self" Discovery that the Joyce King "Everyday People" Award is highlighted and presented. Joyce King was a force of advocacy and recovery, voicing the needs of individuals with behavioral health concerns in effort to create change; and,
WHEREAS, each year, this "Everyday People" Award is presented to an individual who has made significant contributions towards promoting advocacy and recovery in Allegheny County; and,
WHEREAS, The Day of "Self" Discovery acknowledges the national theme of Mental Health Awareness Month, supporting the integration of behavioral health services and primary care; and,
WHEREAS, The Day of "Self" Discovery celebration is sponsored by Community Care Behavioral Health, Multicultural Outreach and Education, Peoples Oakland, Allegheny County Department of Human Services, and Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC; and,
