WHEREAS, Dr. Larry Leahy is a practicing dentist with over 25 years of experience and the owner of Shadyside Dentistry; and,
WHEREAS, soon after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh Dental School, Dr. Leahy became the only dentist in the region willing to treat HIV-positive patients at a time when misconceptions that the virus could be spread through casual contact were widespread; and,
WHEREAS, in the 1980s, when many individuals living with HIV/AIDS could not work due to the virus, Dr. Leahy happily provided his dental services to these patients free of charge; and,
WHEREAS, Dr. Larry Leahy has been an active supporter of Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force for 25 years and served as board president for 4 years during a time of major transition for the organization; and,
WHEREAS, Dr. Leahy has also served on the boards of Dance Alloy, Ellsworth Avenue Business Association, Planned Parenthood, Persad Center, and the Point Park Conservatory of Performing Arts, has been involved in countless organizations and initiatives in support LGBTQIA+ causes, and has been a steadfast supporter of Pittsburgh’s thriving arts and culture scene; and,
WHEREAS, on April 26, 2017, Dr. Larry Leahy will be honored with Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force’s Kerry Stoner Award for his commitment to serving the HIV/AIDS community.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Dr. Larry Leahy for receiving the PATF Kerry Stoner Award in honor of his lifelong and deep-rooted dedication to serving the HIV/AIDS community in Pittsburgh; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare to April 26th, 2017 be “Dr. Larry Leahy Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
