Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the efforts of the Explorers Club of Pittsburgh in keeping our residents healthy and safe and thank them for their rare community service that benefits the City of Pittsburgh; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, April 8, 2017 to be "Explorers Club of Pittsburgh Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Explorers Club of Pittsburgh (ECP) is an outdoor-based organization where members participate in diverse activities such as mountaineering, rock climbing, skiing, scuba diving, canoeing, kayaking, caving, cycling, backpacking, and a host of other outdoor sports; and,

WHEREAS, ECP was founded in 1947 by Ivan Jirak, a former U.S. Marine and college student at Carnegie Institute of Technology, and 30 other interested men and women; and,

WHEREAS, for over 70 years, the ECP has been providing opportunities for active individuals to stay active by learning new skills and meeting new friends who share a passion for the physical and mental challenges of the outdoors; and,

WHEREAS, in addition to outdoor sports, the group offers three schools throughout the year for members to learn backpacking, rock climbing and/or mountaineering and they enjoy sponsoring environmental and community service projects; and,

WHEREAS, one such community service project is their annual Mount Washington Cleanup which will be held on Saturday, April 8 of this year; and,

WHEREAS, what makes this cleanup so unique, however, is that there are several sections of hillside along Grandview Avenue that require climbing skills with the use of a rope and harness which is where Club members volunteer their time and skills; and,

WHEREAS, this year's cleanup will mark the 25th anniversary of the members of ECP giving of their time to beautify Grandview Avenue and its hillsides, which is a favorite among tourists who visit the City of Pittsburgh. And, in most recent years, the Allegheny Mountain Rescue Group has joined them in their endeavor; and,
