Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the 21st anniversary of the signing of the Dayton Peace Accord and commemorate the service of the Balkan Peacekeeping Veterans; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare December 14, 2016 to be the "Balkan Peacekeeper Veterans Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, on December 14th, 1995, the Dayton Peace Agreement was signed, ending the Bosnian War that lasted 3 and ½ years; and,

 

WHEREAS, after the signing of the Dayton Peace Accords, hundreds of Pennsylvania soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen, including large contingents of the Pennsylvania National Guard, deployed to Croatia, Bosnia, Macedonia and Kosovo in support of the United Nations’ (UN) peacekeeping efforts in the former Yugoslavia from 1996-2001; and,

 

WHEREAS, often forgotten, the Balkan Peacekeeper soldiers executed the mission of ensuring peace in this fragile and sometimes volatile region of the world after conflict and deserve recognition and gratitude for their noble service; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the 21st anniversary of the signing of the Dayton Peace Accord and commemorate the service of the Balkan Peacekeeping Veterans; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare December 14, 2016 to be the “Balkan Peacekeeper Veterans Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
