Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh joins with the Holy Assumption of St Mary Orthodox Church in celebrating 100 years of continuous ministry and community engagement in the Southside neighborhood of Pittsburgh, and does hereby declare Tuesday, November 1st 2016 to be "Holy Assumption of St Mary Orthodox Church Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

Body

WHEREAS, the parish of the Holy Assumption of St Mary Orthodox Church was established in 1916 as the SS. Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Church; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Church was renamed in honor of the Theotokos after being forced to move in the early 1930’s and regaining the building in January of 1943; and,

 

WHEREAS, Archimandrite Seraphim was appointed as the first pastor of the Holy Assumption of St Mary Orthodox Church in 1943 and Father John Waschak became its second pastor in 1955; and,

 

WHEREAS, the church has served food to over 30000 community members in need since founding the St. Cyril of White Lake Food Pantry in 2010; and,

 

WHEREAS, the rich history of the Holy Assumption of St Mary Orthodox Church is lined with a constant support of the surrounding community and imbued with a spirit of charity and service;
