Title: NOW, THERFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Honorable Judge Rochelle S. Friedman for her service to residents of Pittsburgh and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and wishes her the best during her retirement; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, November 15th to be "Honorable Judge Rochelle S. Friedman Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, after serving on the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania for 26 years, the Honorable Judge Rochelle S. Friedman is retiring at the end of 2016; and,

 

WHEREAS, Judge Friedman graduated from University of Pittsburgh in 1959 and, upon graduation from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1972, she began her career as a Solicitor and Project Director for the Allegheny County Clerk of Courts; and,

 

WHEREAS, next, she served as the Director of Governor’s Justice Commission and later, she became a law clerk for a Commonwealth Court judge for 13 years; and,

 

WHEREAS, during her years following law school, Judge Friedman was sole practitioner focusing on family law and first amendment cases; and,

 

WHEREAS, she was first elected to the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania in 1991 and in addition to her judicial duties, Judge Friedman served as a mediator; and,

 

WHEREAS, her professional experience transcends the courtroom as she spent time as a legal advisor to the Mayor of Pittsburgh and a board member for Auerbach Central Agency for Jewish Education and Jewish Prisoner Services International; and,

 

WHEREAS, Judge Friedman has eagerly instilled students with her deep-seated knowledge of the law as an adjunct professor at the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Public Health and a continuing legal studies educator for Pennsylvania Bar Association, Pennsylvania Bar Institute, several county bar associations throughout Pennsylvania, and nonprofit and professional organizations; and,
