WHEREAS, Reverend Malachi Smith was born in Lake City, South Carolina, the youngest and only son of Prince and Estelle Smith. He arrived in Pittsburgh in 1958 and found employment with the American Foam and Latex Company where he worked for 10 years until in 1972 he began working for United Parcel Service where he remained until his retirement in 2000; and,
WHEREAS, as a gifted singer, Reverend Smith joined the Sun-Rising Kings Quartet, singing with them for several years before organizing the Dynamic Pittsburgh All-Stars in 1960. This group travelled extensively with him. He was their booking agent and lead vocalist, recording several albums and bringing the Gospel in song to churches and communities across the country until the decision to retire the group in 1983; and,
WHEREAS, upon arriving in Pittsburgh, Reverend Smith joined the Evening Star Baptist Church, where Reverend Kelly was Pastor. Later, he became a member of the Zion Hill Baptist Church in the Hill District under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Kelso Gordon. In 1983, he united with the Central Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Dr. Isaac Green, acknowledged the call to preach the Gospel and was ordained to the work of the Gospel Ministry in December of that same year; and,
WHEREAS, in July of 1965, he was joined in holy matrimony to the former Barbara Ann Whitsett, a marriage that has lasted for 51 years and counting. Together they are the parents of five daughters; Jacqueline Montgomery, Malena Smith, Nadine Smith, Crystal-Renee Alexander and Tawana (Nikki) Smith. Their family has been extended to now include eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and,
WHEREAS, Reverend Smith serves as the President of the Clergy Ministry for the Allegheny Union Baptist Association and is the former Vice President of the Western Region for the Pennsylvania Baptist State Convention. He continues to be a strong, leading figure in the Baptist Church community; and,
