Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize The Pierians for celebrating and supporting the contributions of African-American artists and welcomes the group to Pittsburgh for its 18th National Assembly; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the week of October 20-23, 2016 to be "The Pierians National Assembly Week" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, in December 1958, Annette C. Johnson and nine other women formed a group called The Pierians with a focus on the visual, performing, and literary arts. The Pierians was formally incorporated in 1982; and,

 

WHEREAS, The Pierians enhances the enjoyment and appreciation of the arts by celebrating individuals in the community for their contributions to the arts and by providing community awards and scholarships; and,

 

WHEREAS, the group celebrates the artistic work of African-American individuals throughout history and in our modern times and pays special homage to the work of African-American artists during the 19th Century and the Civil Rights Era; and,

 

WHEREAS, the organization is growing and now has thirteen chapters nationwide, including an active chapter in Pittsburgh that was established in 1985; and,

 

WHEREAS, from October 20-23, Pittsburgh will host the Pierians’ 18th National Assembly, during which attendees from across the country will be able to explore the city’s vibrant arts community and visit various arts venues; and,
