Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend Community Day School on 45 years of developing confident learners and compassionate leaders, for transforming and changing with the times and for going from strength to strength; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, September 20, 2016, to be "COMMUNITY DAY SCHOOL DAY" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Community Day School is the region's only independent, co-ed Jewish day school where Pittsburgh families span the spectrum of Jewish belief and practice while maintaining high academic excellence and achievement ; and,

WHEREAS, the mission of Community Day School is educate young people who are academically strong to be good people, knowledgeable Jews and contributing citizens. This is accomplished through respecting educators, learning, children, parents, the facility itself and the school as an institution while promoting an educational philosophy that is rigorous and transformative; and,

WHEREAS, established in 1972 by a group of parents who organized as a non-denominational Jewish Day School, located in the old Hebrew Institute building on Forbes and Denniston, it began with only K-3 under the leadership of Principal Jackie Tucker with one grade added each year through the 8th grade. In 1988, with an enrollment of 77 students, it merged with the South Hills Solomon Schechter School which had 30 students and in 1991, the school became part of the Jewish Education Institute, a citywide umbrella for Jewish education. When the enrollment capped at 390 students and demographics and space needs shifted, the school acquired the St. Philomena's Church and School in Squirrel Hill with the help of City Councilman Bob O'Connor, Mayor Tom Murphy, SHUC leader Mardi Isler and the Jewish Federation of Pittsburgh. Today the building is an academic center with 280 students led by Principal Avi Baron Munro and is a hub of neighborhood activity.; and,

WHEREAS, Community Day School is celebrating 45 years of success. with a Ribbon Cutting for the installation of 45th anniversary banners around the campus, a fundraiser in December to raise money for the 8th Grade Israel Trip and the 2017 Winter Gala at the August Wilson Center honoring community and school leaders; and,
