Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Dr. Matyjasewski for his impressive accomplishments and international recognition which is an inspiration to the Polish-American community throughout the City of Pittsburgh; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, September 17, 2016 to be "Krzysztof Matyjaszewski Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Krzysztof (Kris) Matyjaszewski, Ph.D., born in Konstantynow, Poland in 1950, has been named Outstanding Polonian of the year by The Pittsburgh Chapter of the Kosciuszko Foundation; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Matyjaszewski is an internationally recognized polymer chemist and professor in the Department of Chemistry within Carnegie Mellon University's (CMU) Mellon College of Science; and,

WHEREAS, Professor Matyjaszewski is one of the leading educators in the field of polymer chemistry and currently has 15 doctoral students and 5 postdoctoral fellows and has mentored more than 200 undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students since joining CMU; and,

WHEREAS, he has written 17 books, 84 book chapters and more than 866 peer-reviewed scientific papers and his work has been cited in the scientific literature more than 65,000 times, which makes him the most cited chemist in the world; and,

WHEREAS, Dr. Matyjaszewski has received numerous awards and recognition for his work including more recently the 2014 National Institute of Materials Science (Japan) Award and the Inaugural AkzoNobel North American Science Award (ACS) in 2013; and,

WHEREAS, he is a co-inventor on 50 issued U.S. patented technologies, holds 147 international patents and has 36 U.S. patent applications pending approval; and,

WHEREAS, most recently, with a 3 million dollar grant, Professor Matyjaszewski is part of a research team at CMU to provide the US Military with drones, gliders and other delivery vehicles that can "vanish" after delivering supplies or intelligence to our troops; and,
