Title: NOW, THERFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the remarkable accomplishments of Dr. Freddie Fu as one of the world's foremost experts in sports medicine and as a committed Pittsburgh resident and philanthropist; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, September 13th to be "Dr. Freddie Fu Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Dr. Freddie Fu was born and raised in Hong Kong and moved to Pittsburgh in 1977 to attend the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and complete his orthopaedic residency training; and,

WHEREAS, after playing an integral role in helping to establish the Sports and Preventive Medicine Institute, Dr. Fu became the head team physician and orthopaedic surgeon for the University of Pittsburgh Athletic Department, and in 1997 he became the David Silver Professor and chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine; and,

WHEREAS, in 2000, Dr. Fu designed and oversaw the construction of the $80 million, state-of-the-art UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on Pittsburgh's Southside, which has grown to become one of the world's largest and most well-regarded sports medicine facilities; and,

WHEREAS, Dr. Fu has earned international recognition for his groundbreaking research into the best practices for the reconstruction of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) after sports-related injuries; and,

WHEREAS, Dr. Fu has edited 26 orthopaedic textbooks, authored 79 papers on sports medicine, contributed to more than 215 research publications, participated in more than 650 presentations to colleagues worldwide, and completed over 7,000 reconstructive ACL surgeries on athletes and other patients in Pittsburgh and around the globe; and,

WHEREAS, in July of 2016, Dr. Fu became the first Pittsburgher inducted into the prestigious American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Hall of Fame; and,

WHEREAS, Dr. Fu's impact transcends the medical field and can be felt in communities throughout Pittsburgh. Dr. Fu has devoted time and energy to causes ranging from workforce development to the Senior Olympic Games, and also developed UPMC's Sports Medicine Fellowship Program, which attracts global talent to Pittsburgh and helps to advance Pittsburgh's standing as one of the world's leading cities in the medical and ...
