Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby celebrate the accomplishments of Pittsburgh native, Oakland Catholic High School alumna, and Olympic Gold medalist Amanda Polk; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, September 8th to be "Amanda Polk Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Amanda Polk was born and raised in Pittsburgh’s Bloomfield neighborhood and attended Oakland Catholic High School; and,

 

WHEREAS, during her sophomore year, Amanda, a standout basketball star, decided to join Oakland Catholic’s rowing team in order to train for basketball season; and,

 

WHEREAS, she gained national attention as a high school rower and enjoyed an undefeated season during her senior year all while exhibiting excellence in the classroom as an honors student; and,

 

WHEREAS, upon graduation from Oakland Catholic in 2004, Amanda attended Notre Dame University where she continued her dominance as the most successful rower in the college’s history; and,

 

WHEREAS, since high school graduation, she has won twelve international rowing championships with the United States Rowing Team and rose up the ranks to earn recognition as the world’s third best rower; and,

 

WHEREAS, Amanda was named a member of the world-renowned United States Women’s Eight Boat for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, and there, she and her teammates earned the third consecutive World Rowing Championship for the United States and an Olympic Gold medal in Women’s Coxed Eight Rowing; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby celebrate the accomplishments of Pittsburgh native, Oakland Catholic High School alumna, and Olympic Gold medalist Amanda Polk; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, September 8th  to be “Amanda Polk Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
