Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend this franchise for its social and cultural significance and relationship with Pittsburgh as well as Row House Cinema for its hard-work in helping to publicly recognize this historic anniversary; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Wednesday, September 7th, 2016 to be "Star Trek Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, for the last 50 years, Star Trek has been of the most culturally influential and most popular franchises, reaching far beyond the world of science fiction; and,

WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh has and continues to be a leader in the arts and sciences; and,

WHEREAS, the Star Trek franchise uses the medium of television and film to address social topics such as racism, sexism, and xenophobia through engaging story lines and character development; and,

WHEREAS, Star Trek has used settings, plots, and characters to promote diversity, equity, and equality by providing pivotal roles to minority actors, influencing generations of young and old alike and reflecting the wider lens of society; and,

WHEREAS, the franchise uses superior special effects and brilliant scripts, many of which authored by notable science fiction writers, Star Trek sets the standard for not only science fiction television shows, but for all of television programming and film; and,

WHEREAS, Pittsburgh has and continues a shared history with Star Trek, supporting the franchise's endeavors by producing local acting talent, hosting well-attended conventions, and by providing inspirations as the city remains on the cutting edge of science and technology including robotics and virtual reality; and,

WHEREAS, this connection was written into the story as Western Pennsylvania serves as the setting of a Vulcan crash landing in the television series Star Trek: Enterprise suggesting that during the 1950s they lived among us; and,

WHEREAS, Row House Cinema, a leader in Pittsburgh's burgeoning independent movie theater community, recognizes the cultural and social importance and power of Star Trek as well as the special relationship between the city and franchise moving it to lead and highlight the celebration of Star Trek's 50th Anniversary; and,
