Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the staff of UPMC Shadyside Hospital for offering Pittsburgh residents high-quality and lifesaving care, helping to establish Pittsburgh as a worldwide leader in the medical sector, and contributing to the quality of life of the Pittsburgh region and does hereby celebrate the hospital's 150th anniversary; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare August 3, 2016 to be "UPMC Shadyside Hospital 150th Anniversary Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, in 1866, at time when fewer than 175 hospitals existed nationwide, the 38-bed Homeopathic Medical and Surgical Hospital and Dispensary of Pittsburgh opened on Second Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh; and,

WHEREAS, in 1910, many of the hospital's employees were transferred to a new six-story hospital in Pittsburgh's Shadyside neighborhood; and,

WHEREAS, the hospital was officially renamed Shadyside Hospital in 1938 and two years later, the hospital's School of Nursing, the first located between the Allegheny Mountains and Chicago, moved into a brand new building adjacent to the hospital; and,

WHEREAS, over the years, the Shadyside Hospital campus expanded its physical footprint, quality patient services, and technological contributions through the addition of clinical laboratories, the region's first coronary care unit, the Autologous Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit, and the Mary Hillman Jennings Radiation Oncology Center; and,

WHEREAS, in 1997, UPMC Shadyside Hospital joined the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center network, and three years later was named one of the top 100 cardiovascular hospitals nationwide; and,

WHEREAS, in 2001 and 2002 respectively, UPMC opened Posner Tower, which includes a high-tech surgical center and a state-of-the-art comprehensive pain center, and the Hillman Cancer Center, which is now the flagship home of the UPMC Cancer Center, further advancing UPMC Shadyside Hospital's standing as one of the best hospitals in the nation; and,

WHEREAS, today, the world-renowned UPMC Shadyside Hospital has 520 beds, offers patients a broad range of specialties including cardiology, oncology, and endocrinology, and is home to a world-class nursing education program; and,
