WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded in 1913 by a group of 22 collegiate women at Howard University to form a collective voice of change, promote academic excellence, and advance educational accessibility. The sorority's first public act was marching in the Women's Suffrage March in the spring of 1913; and,
WHEREAS, formally incorporated in 1930, Delta Sigma Theta has grown to include 1,000 chapters in the United States, England, Germany, Japan, Jamaica, and the Republic of Korea with over 200,000 members and alumni; and,
WHEREAS, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is home to many prominent women, including Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American women to serve in the United States House of Representatives, Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, the first African-American woman to deliver the keynote address during a major political convention, former United States Secretary of Labor Alexis Herman, and Dr. Shirley Jackson, current President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the first African-American woman to lead a major technological university; and,
WHEREAS, across the world, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority implements programs to benefit local communities and utilizes a Five-Point Programmatic Thrust, focusing on economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement to create its national programs; and,
WHEREAS, the Eastern Region encompasses Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington, D.C., and the region will hold its 50th annual regional conference in Pittsburgh from August 4-7; and,
WHEREAS, during the three-day conference, members will develop the organization's public service agenda, participate in workshops, and complete community service projects in Pittsburgh neighborhoods; and,
