WHEREAS, South Hills High School (1917-1986) Class of 1966, is celebrating its 50th High School Reunion Friday, July 29-Sunday, July 31; and,
WHEREAS, the 1966 graduating class had 634 graduates consisting of 308 boys and 326 girls. Some of the graduating class went on to become doctors, dentists, nurses, lawyers, corporate financial officers, TV personalities, postal workers, and firemen, just to name a few; and,
WHEREAS, we would like to remember one of our classmates, Captain Charles Brace, City of Pittsburgh Fire Bureau, who was one of two city fireman who lost their life on March 16, 2006 fighting a fire at Ebenezer Baptist Church; and,
WHEREAS, South Hills High School (SHHS) was located along the southern slope of Mt. Washington from 1917-1986. For sixty of its seventy years, SHHS served all public school students from the Mt. Washington, Banksville, Beechview, Brookline, Arlington and Beltzhoover communities. Enrollment at SHHS peaked at 2,925 in February, 1939; and,
WHEREAS, participation in organized sports such as football, track, and basketball was a big part of the lives of SHHS Students. Scholastic athletics were quite an experience whether you were a player, a cheerleader, member of the band or a spectator who filled the bleachers. In 1966, SHHS was named City Champions in the sports of swimming and golf; and,
WHEREAS, South Hills High School is proud to be one of the largest alumni associations in the City of Pittsburgh; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby congratulate the Class of 1966 on their 50th High School Reunion; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday-Sunday, July 29-July 31, 2016, to be “SHHS Class of 1966 Days” in the City of Pittsburgh.
