Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby celebrate Dr. Michael Murphy's lasting contributions to Carnegie Mellon University and the City of Pittsburgh; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare July 19th, 2016 to be "Dr. Michael Murphy Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, in 1982, Michael Murphy joined the staff of Carnegie Mellon University as Area Coordinator for Housing Services and immediately made a lasting impression on faculty, staff, and especially students; and,

 

WHEREAS, five years later, Dr. Murphy was named Dean of Student Affairs, a position he held until becoming an Associate Vice President in 2005 and finally, Vice President of Campus Affairs in 2008; and,

 

WHEREAS, during his 33-year tenure at Carnegie Mellon, Dr. Murphy worked closely with student groups, student leaders, faculty, and university leadership to transform campus life and develop programs to engage students on campus; and,

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Murphy has made a tremendous impact on the physical footprint of Carnegie Mellon University’s campus.  He supervised the development of new student housing and tirelessly led the creation of the University’s master plan, the results of which can now be seen along Forbes Avenue and throughout the East End campus; and,

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Murphy created a neighborhood outreach program and forged strong relationships with the communities surrounding Carnegie Mellon’s campus to ensure that the University is a responsive and attentive neighbor; and,

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Murphy’s dedication to providing a world-class campus life has attracted students from all around the globe to Pittsburgh and contributed to vitality of the city’s economy and the vibrancy of city neighborhoods; and,

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby celebrate Dr. Michael Murphy’s lasting contributions to Carnegie Mellon University and the City of Pittsburgh; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare July 19th, 2016 to be “Dr. Michael Murphy Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
