WHEREAS, the 1966 class of Pittsburgh Schenley High School seeks to honor the school’s remarkable history as it approaches its 100th anniversary in October, as well as celebrate their own 50th class reunion; and,
WHEREAS, Schenley is a lineal descendant of Pittsburgh Central High School, the city’s first public secondary institution, which opened in 1855 as the region’s preeminent college preparatory school before it was replaced by Schenley in the fall of 1916; and,
WHEREAS, over the next 95 years, Schenley was marked by high academic achievement, racial and ethnic diversity and cooperation, a commitment to the arts and creativity, and championship athletic teams; and,
WHEREAS, notable Schenley alumni include Andy Warhol, Derrick Bell, Kenny Durrett, Bruno Sammartino, Ray Brown, Bob Prince, Maurice Lucas, Vivian Reed, Walt Harper, DeJuan Blair, and many more; and,
WHEREAS, Schenley was dissolved in 2011, three years after the building was controversially closed, but its large, vibrant and diverse alumni network continues to celebrate the school’s remarkable impact; and,
WHEREAS, this year, for the 100th anniversary of Schenley’s inception, the Class of ’66 will honor that long history as it celebrates its 50th reunion; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare July 19, 2016 to be “Schenley High School Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
