WHEREAS, Mike Nichols began his career as a distinguished civil servant with the Pittsburgh Department of Public Works more than 28 years ago, however, it is his true passion of reading to young children that he hopes will be his lasting legacy; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Nichols began reading to students in 1992, more than 20 years ago at Pittsburgh’s Arsenal PreK-5 when asked by Ms. Theresa Cherry, an educator at the school, and has since then read at more than six of Pittsburgh’s Public Elementary and Middle schools and continues to positively influence generations of students; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Nichols himself graduated from a Pittsburgh Public School, Schenley High School in 1979, and understands the importance of building a strong educational foundation for children which starts with fostering a love of reading in children at an early age; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Nichols’ unwavering commitment to early childhood development has led him to become involved with the Beginning with Books program, the Everybody Wins with Reading program, as well as Junior Achievement; and,
WHEREAS, In addition to reading to children, Mr. Nichols has served his community by being a member of the Take a Father to School Day Planning Committee and has served on the Board of Directors for the Sickle Cell Foundation; and,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend, recognize, and congratulate Mr. Nichols on more than 20 years of service to the people of Pittsburgh; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare July 12th, 2016, to be “Mike Nichols Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
