Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes the work of Virginia Carik, and does hereby declare Monday, June 20th, 2016 to be "Virginia Carik Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Virginia Carik was born in the Mon-Valley and moved to the South Side following her marriage; and

 

WHEREAS, Virginia is a loving mother and grandmother who has lived for almost fifty years in the heart of South Side on Carey Way; and

 

WHEREAS, Virginia served first St. John’s Parish and later after the consolidation of the South Side Roman Catholic Parishes, the Prince of Peace Roman Catholic Parish as a member of the Christian Mother’s Organization. Virginia loves her church congregation and has volunteered for many years with many church activities and events; and

 

WHEREAS, Virginia was involved with historic preservation in the South Side neighborhood, including saving the Oliver Bathhouse, the South Side Market House, and preserving the South Side branch of the Carnegie Library; and

 

WHEREAS, Virginia has always been concerned about the South Side throughout her life, she served several terms as an officer of the South Side Community Council and several terms as an officer of the Friends of the South Side Library; and

 

WHEREAS, Virginia also served several terms on the South Side Planning Forum, the LTV Steering Committee, and the Board of Directors of the South Side Local Development Company; and

 

WHEREAS, Virginia was instrumental in raising money for South Side charities through the South Side Community Council’s Ethnic Lunch and the annual Taste of the South Side event at the South Side Library; and

 

WHEREAS, Virginia is a strong, quiet woman who has made an indelible mark on the South Side community.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes the work of Virginia Carik, and does hereby declare Monday, June 20th, 2016 to be “Virginia Carik Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
