Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby note the importance of recognizing the American Flag through the established holiday of Flag Day each June 14th and commends and congratulates the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy for its forward thinking and visionary plan to preserve and display the Pittsburgh Flag Monument in a new more highly visible and easily accessible location for the benefit of the citizens of Pittsburgh; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, June 14, 2016, to be "FLAG DAY" and "PITTSBURGH FLAG MONUMENT DAY" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Flag Day, celebrated on June 14th each year, commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on that day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress, in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day and on August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress. While it is not an official federal holiday, it is celebrated in all of the states, the first state to celebrate it being Pennsylvania; and,

WHEREAS, Pittsburgh's Flag Monument, honoring the American Flag and Flag Day, was originally placed at the entrance to Phipps Conservatory and dedicated on June 14, 1927, the 150th anniversary of the American Flag. It was funded by over 188,000 Pittsburgh school children who donated a penny each for construction. The granite and bronze monument was moved next to the Westinghouse Monument in 1967; and,

WHEREAS, as part of the current restoration project for the Westinghouse Memorial, it was decided to relocate the Flag Monument to provide a more fitting location with high visibility and improved accessibility. City officials and the Art Commission have chosen a place between a historic stone wall and a flag pole across from the original location at the base of Flagstaff Hill for the new location; and,

WHEREAS, The Flag Monument Rededication Ceremony takes place Tuesday, June 14th, at 10AM at the base of Flagstaff Hill on Frank Curto Drive, directly across from Phipps Conservatory; and,
