Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Maurice Reid on the occasion of his 93rd birthday for his long and distinctive service to his church and his community; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Sunday, June 5, 2016 to be "Maurice Reid Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Maurice Reid was born June 5, 1923, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, attended and graduated from Atkins High School in 1942 and received an Associate’s Degree from Winston-Salem Teachers College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and,

 

WHEREAS, Maurice Reid was drafted into the United States Army in 1952 where he served in the 371th Armored Infantry Battalion for four years, serving as Company Clerk; and,

 

WHEREAS, in the 1960’s, Maurice moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  He was a member of Olivet Baptist Church for approximately 14 years.  While there, he served as the church’s Sexton and Director of the Young People’s Choir and the Gospel Chorus; and,

 

WHEREAS, in the 1970’s, Maurice joined the Homewood African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and has been a member for nearly 40 years; and,

 

WHEREAS, at Homewood A.M.E. Zion Church he has served in the following capacities: Church Sexton, Director of the Gospel Chorus and President of the Lay Council.  At the Conference level, he was recently appointed as the Personal Marshall for Bishop Louis Hunter, Sr.  He has been elected as a delegate to the Annual Allegheny Conference multiple times and has served as the Allegheny Conference President of the Lay Council and Allegheny Conference Chaplain; and,

 

WHEREAS, on Sunday, June 5, 2016, Maurice will celebrate his 93rd birthday; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Maurice Reid on the occasion of his 93rd birthday for his long and distinctive service to his church and his community; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Sunday, June 5, 2016 to be “Maurice Reid Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
