Title: NOW, THERFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the valuable contributions of the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center and its integral role in advancing Pittsburgh's technological renaissance; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare June 9, 2016 to be "Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center 30th Anniversary Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) was established as one of five supercomputing centers nationwide by Carnegie Mellon University and University of Pittsburgh on June 9, 1986, the same day as the debut of the CRAY X-MP/48, one of the world’s first supercomputers; and,

 

WHEREAS, the PSC, an early trailblazer in the most advanced computing storage and communications technology, has developed a national reputation for enabling scientific and technological breakthroughs across all disciplines; and,

 

WHEREAS, over its 30-year history, the PSC has secured over $600 million in federal funding to support advancements in technology and all disciplines of science, contributing to Pittsburgh’s impressive economic resurgence in technology, science, and groundbreaking research; and,

 

WHEREAS, both large and small companies throughout Pennsylvania have developed new technologies using the PSC’s facilities and expertise; and,

 

WHEREAS, since its inception, the PSC has provided free computer training seminars and workshops to educational institutions throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, granting students the opportunity to hone the skills necessary to compete in the 21st century economy and assisting faculty in acquiring federal funding for projects; and,

 

WHEREAS, over 300 of the PSC’s talented former employees and interns are still employed in the high-tech sector, most of whom still reside and work in the Pittsburgh region and throughout Pennsylvania; and,
