Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby proclaims the City of Pittsburgh to be a Purple Heart City, and; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council hereby declares Wednesday, June 1, 2016, to be "Purple Heart City Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Greater Pittsburgh, Chapter 455 has the mission is to assist ALL Veterans, their widows, and orphan children, and;

WHEREAS, the organization now known as the "Military Order of the Purple Heart," was formed in 1932 for the protection and mutual interest of all who have received the decoration, and;

WHEREAS, the Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Program provides Veterans with services and advocacy, including helping Veterans to navigate claims and benefits with the VA and other government programs, serving on the President's Committee for employment of people with disabilities, assisting in identifying and helping homeless veterans, and providing representation for Veterans in the Court of Veterans Appeals, and;

WHEREAS, the Purple Heart is awarded to members of the armed forces of the U.S. who are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy and posthumously to the next of kin in the name of those who are killed in action or die of wounds received in action, and;

WHEREAS, introduced as the "Badge of Military Merit" by General George Washington in 1782, the Purple Heart is the nation's oldest military award though it was ignored for nearly 150 years until it was reintroduced on February 22, 1932, on the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth, and;

WHEREAS, at this time, it is estimated that there have been 1.8 million Purple Hearts awarded since 1932 when the award was reintroduced, and;

WHEREAS, to honor these individuals, local and regional governments across the country have begun to adopt the title of Purple Heart City, Town, or County, and;

WHEREAS, there are over 1,200 cities, states, and counties that have adopted this title across the United States, and;

WHEREAS, in partnership with the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Greater Pittsburgh, Chapter 455, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does move to join these municipalities across the country in becoming a "Purple ...
