Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and value the efforts of all those associated with the Cheers for Ears campaign who work to increase awareness about hearing loss and communication disabilities and raise funds for the Hearing Center at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare May 24, 2016 to be "Cheers for Ears Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, approximately 34 million Americans have some form of hearing loss, half of whom are under the age of 65, making it the third most common health problem in the United States, and studies show that neglecting hearing loss can accelerate its progression; and,

WHEREAS, as the number of people who have communication disabilities grows, so too does the need for funding for technological advancements in cochlear implants and hearing aids and research in speech language pathology and audiology to enable more people to lead independent, productive, and fulfilling lives; and,

WHEREAS, since 1927, the month of May is designated as National Better Hearing and Speech Month in order to raise awareness about hearing loss and speech impediments, including causes, prevention techniques, and treatments; and,

WHEREAS, each year during Better Hearing and Speech Month, the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation launches Cheers for Ears, a campaign in partnership with area schools and other stakeholders to increase awareness of hearing loss, communication disabilities, and hearing safety and raise funds to support the Hearing Center, including: the hearing aid assistance program, music therapy, research, and treatment; and,

WHEREAS, this year, thanks to the generous support of 20 area schools and Pittsburgh-based businesses Fluxx Audio/Microsonic and Sincerely Yogurt, the Cheers for Ears campaign has reached 10,000 students and raised thousands of dollars for the Hearing Center; and,
