Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Ed and Jean Harkins for their volunteer efforts and commitment to their family and community; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, May 12, 2016, to be "Ed and Jean Harkins Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Ed and Jean Harkins have been a staple to the Sheraden community with their tireless volunteerism and dedication to the neighborhood of the City of Pittsburgh; and,

WHEREAS, Ed is a retired City of Pittsburgh Firefighter and Army Veteran who serves his fellow veterans as president of the VFW Post 418 located in McKees Rocks and has volunteered his handyman services for the American Legion Post 496 located in Sheraden and even gives up a portion of his garage to temporarily hang wet American Flags to dry; and,

WHEREAS, his wife Jean supports his efforts by planting and weeding the flower gardens at the War Memorials in Sheraden and Elliott and volunteers at the American Legion Post 496 for their annual Memorial Day luncheon following the prayer service at the memorials; and,

WHEREAS, Jean clocks in between 45-80 hours of volunteerism each month by doing numerous good deeds including, but not limited to, collecting and distributing children's books, reading at the daycare center, volunteering for Meals on Wheels and the local food bank, works as a respite worker for Catholic Charities, visits the sick of her community at home or at the hospital, volunteers at her parish and Guardian Angels Church, and continues to work with the Cub Scouts well after being a pack leader for her sons' troops; and,

WHEREAS, Jean is a member of the Sheraden Community Council, and the Kiwanis Club of Sheraden where she has served as a Board Member, President Elect and President and Chairperson and advisor for many of the club's community events for children and youth and founded and manages the Blessings in a Backpack Program at Pittsburgh Langley K-8; and,

WHEREAS, Ed and Jean reside in Sheraden and have one daughter and five sons together and currently enjoy one grandson; and,
