Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh thanks the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh for their contributions to Fiberart International 2016 and the overall cultural landscape in Pittsburgh, and; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare May 6, 2016 to be "Fiberart International Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, since 1979, Pittsburgh, PA has been home to one of the most prestigious contemporary fiber art exhibitions.  This year, the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh hosts the 22nd Triennial Fiberart International 2016, and;

 

WHEREAS, Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh, Inc. is a nonprofit, member-supported organization that promotes appreciation of fiberart and fosters its development and continuation, and;

 

WHEREAS, Fiberart International 2016 is a juried show displaying a selection of the best recently created fiberart pieces in the world, and;

 

WHEREAS, this truly international show showcases new and innovative interpretations of traditional techniques with 79 artists represented from 14 different countries including Japan, Hungary, Australia, and France, and;

 

WHEREAS, the jurors were three prominent fiber artists chosen for their diversity of accomplishments and artistic viewpoints: Chunghie Lee (Seoul, SK), Arturo Alonzo Sandoval (Lexington, KY), and Tali Weinberg (Berkeley, CA), and;

 

WHEREAS, the jurors were tasked with the selection of 81 pieces from the over 1,200 artworks submitted from 30 countries, and;

 

WHEREAS, Fiberart International 2016 kicked off in February 2016 with “Pop des Fleurs,” a community fiberart outreach project in conjunction with the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.  Intended to spread fiberart throughout the general community and to “grow” cheer in the gray Pittsburgh winter, Pop des Fleurs saw the installation of created flowers outside many Carnegie Library locations as well as other venues throughout Pittsburgh and the world, and;

 

WHEREAS, Fiberart International 2016 officially opens Friday, May 6th.  Opening weekend events include the Opening Reception at both Society for Contemporary Craft and the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, as well as the Fiberart Forum at both locations on May 7th.  The exhibition runs through August 21, 2016, and;

 

WHEREAS, Fiberart International 2016 is generously funded in part by the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh, the Heinz Endowments, the Sprout Fund, the Fine Foundation, Friends of Fiberart International, and the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts, and;
