WHEREAS, on March 14, 2016, the Varsity Hockey Team of Bishop Canevin High School, located in the Oakwood section of the City of Pittsburgh, defeated #1 seed Mars High School by a score of 5-1 to win the 2016 Penguins Cup Championship; and,
WHEREAS, this year’s win marks the 8th Penguins Cup title for Bishop Canevin High School , who is now tied with Meadville High School for the most Penguins Cup titles won at a single class; and,
WHEREAS, it also marks 1 more title away from winning the most Penguins Cup titles in all of high school hockey history; and,
WHEREAS, this is a remarkable end to a season that might not have happened because the school was uncertain that they would have enough players to field a team. In addition, the coach resigned at the beginning of the season just before an influx of seven freshmen and several late additions, which allowed the team to stay active and prompted the hire of current coach Kevin Pawlos; and,
WHEREAS, in spite of losing six seniors on the team, Bishop Canevin will have a solid group coming back next season for another possible run to the Penguins Cup Finals and a chance to make history; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby congratulate the Bishop Canevin Hockey Team and Head Coach Kevin Pawlos, Assistant Coach Jeremy Swegman and Assistant Coach Anthony Scarpino for an incredible season; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Wednesday, April 27, 2016, to be “Bishop Canevin Hockey Team Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
