Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh honors Mrs. Irene Smaglo's 100 years of life, wisdom, and accomplishments, and; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 19, 2016 to be "Irene Smaglo Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Brookline resident, Mrs. Irene Smaglo, turned 100 years old on March 15, 2016, and;

WHEREAS, a Pittsburgher all her life, Mrs. Smaglo was born in Oakland on March 15, 1916 to Felice and Henry Nedobylek, and;

WHEREAS, Mrs. Smaglo took business classes at Fifth Avenue High School, which now sits on the National Register of Historic Places, and later graduated from Schenley High School, and after graduation she worked at White Linen Company, and;

WHEREAS, On May 28, 1940, at the age of 24, she married Leo M. Smaglo and later raised seven children: Felicia, Leon, Daniel, Teresa, Mary Ann McHarg, Michael, and Marjorie, and;

WHEREAS, when Mrs. Smaglo's youngest child entered school she went back to work part-time in the Medical Records Department at Montefiore Hospital in Oakland, in the same neighborhood where she was born, and;

WHEREAS, Mrs. Smaglo lost her husband Leo, who was only 51 when he was killed at the Jones & Laughlin Mill where he worked as a brakeman, and where her father also died in an accident years earlier, and;

WHEREAS, after Leo's death, Mrs. Smaglo began working full time at Montefiore, retiring in her seventies after more than 25 years of service to the hospital, and;

WHEREAS, for much of her life, Mrs. Smaglo has been a voracious reader and skilled cook and baker in her free time, cooking pierogies that were loved by all, and;

WHEREAS, Mrs. Smaglo has been a member of St. Pius Church in Brookline for more than 36 years. Additionally, she was a member of the Christian Mothers Society, Holy Rosary Society and Polish Women's Alliance of America, and;

WHEREAS, Mrs. Smaglo now spends time with her children and twelve grandchildren, and;
