WHEREAS, on April 11th, 1968, Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 was passed, which set forth a national policy of fair housing without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or handicap, mandating fair housing opportunities for all citizens; and,
WHEREAS, with rising economic inequality and a shortage of affordable housing options, the City and its residents are familiar with the need for fair housing policies and that the fight against housing discrimination continues; and,
WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Commission on Human Relations enforces the Pittsburgh City Code Chapter 659.03, prohibiting unlawful housing practices and joins with partners to raise awareness of fair housing issues and the discrimination that, despite great efforts, persist; and,
WHEREAS, National Fair Housing Month is a time to join together in the task of eradicating housing discrimination and affirming our commitment to fair housing policies; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh encourages all agencies, institutions, and individuals, public and private, to abide by the letter and spirit of Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act in pursuit of expanding housing opportunities for all; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the month of April 2016, to be "Fair Housing Month" in the City of Pittsburgh.
