Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and congratulate Harold Hayes for a distinguished career in broadcast journalism, 37 of those with KDKA, for being recognized by his colleagues as the consummate journalist and wishes Harold Hayes health, happiness and safe travels on the occasion of his retirement; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, April 19, 2016, to be "HAROLD HAYES DAY" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, May of 2016 will mark 40 years of excellent journalism and the retirement of outstanding reporter, broadcaster and journalist Harold Hayes; and,

WHEREAS, born in McKeesport and raised in Beltzhoover, Harold Hayes attended Beltzhoover Elementary School, Knoxville Jr. High School, South Hills High School and the University of Pittsburgh with a BA in Communications in 1975. After employment with the Urban League's Reading Is Fundamental program, Harold began a broadcasting career as a radio announcer and reporter with WSIV in Pekin, IL and at WRAU in Peoria, IL ; and,

WHEREAS, 1979 proved to be a banner year for Harold; after answering a call for an interview with KDKA, Harold began a successful and eventful 37 year association as a General Assignment Reporter for KDKA; and,

WHEREAS, locally, Harold Hayes has covered nearly every major local story in the city, from the baseball drug trials, the Pittsburgh mob trials, to Baumhammers, Poplawski, Ferrante and Sandusky, to the city's financial troubles and the death of two sitting Mayors. He has distinguished himself on many national and international stories including 4 Democratic Conventions, an interview with Bill Clinton, overseas trips to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait to cover the Middle East and the funeral of Pope John Paul II; and,

WHEREAS, Harold has been married to his wife, Denise, since 1984 and has 2 daughters, Lindsay and Kristin. Active in the community and in his church, Harold created a scholarship in his mother's name at NEED; and,
