Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby applaud Rabbis Jamie Gibson and Karen Gorban, Cantor Laura Berman, Executive Director Deborah Fidel, the rest of Temple Sinai's staff, the board of directors, and the entire congregation for their commitment to the ideals of Reform Judaism, social justice, and lifelong learning and for seventy years of success; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 19th, 2016 to be "Temple Sinai Seventieth Anniversary Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Temple Sinai was founded in the winter of 1946 by a group of local Jewish leaders who desired to create a welcoming, tight-knit congregation of Reform Jews; and,

 

WHEREAS, the synagogue moved into the beautiful Worthington Mansion along Forbes Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood, where it still thrives as a congregation of 850 families; and,

 

WHEREAS, from its inception seventy years ago, Temple Sinai has been committed to completing acts of kindness in Pittsburgh neighborhoods, promoting the values of social justice, and providing congregants with opportunities for learning and civic engagement; and,

 

WHEREAS, over the past seventy years, the synagogue has strengthened its pledge to the greater community by uplifting and serving those less fortunate, providing a safe and welcoming space for the LGBTQIA community, and educating and engaging youth and young adults in its growing Hebrew School and Confirmation programs; and

 

WHEREAS, Temple Sinai offers weekly Shabbat services, ceremonies for all Jewish holidays, and even a monthly twist on the typical Shabbat service with the popular “Mostly Musical Shabbat,”; and,
