Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby thank the NIASHF for continuing to recognize great Italian sports figures around our region; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, March 29, 2016, to be "National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame (NIASHF) was founded as a non-profit, educational institution in 1977 dedicated to preserving and promoting the history and heritage of Italian American athletes who have made lasting contributions to a wide array of sports; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 38 years, the Hall has collected numerous priceless artifacts including Mario Andretti’s Indy 500 racecar, Rocky Marciano’s first heavyweight championship belt, Vince Lombardi’s last coat worn as coach of the Green Bay Packers and swimmer Matt Biondi’s Olympic Gold Medals; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 1986, the Pittsburgh Chapter was founded and has inducted over 100 Italian American athletes from the greater Pittsburgh area; some nationally-known and others amateurs who have made an impact on the local sporting scene; and,

 

WHEREAS, each year the Pittsburgh Chapter awards scholarships to area High School students in need that have demonstrated high academic achievement and athletic ability.  In the last 30 years, the NIASHF has awarded over 140 scholarships to high school seniors in Western Pennsylvania.; and,

 

WHEREAS, on Sunday, April 10th, 2016, the Pittsburgh Chapter of the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame will be hosting its 30th Annual Awards and Scholarship Banquet at the Westin Convention Hotel; and,
