Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Bishop McKinley Young for his long and distinctive service to the African Methodist Episcopal Church; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, March 18, 2016, to be "Bishop McKinley Young Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Bishop McKinley Young is the Presiding Prelate of the Third Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church He oversees churches throughout the state of Ohio, West Virginia and Western Pennsylvania; and,

WHEREAS, Bishop Young is a native of Atlanta, GA, a son of the Parsonage and a product of the public schools of Atlanta. He furthered his education by obtaining degrees from Morris Brown College in Atlanta, GA, Andover Newton Theological School in Massachusetts and the University of Chicago Divinity School in Chicago, Illinois. Bishop Young also received Honorary Doctorates in Humane Letters from Morris Brown College and Paul Quinn College and an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Edward Waters College; and,

WHEREAS, in 1992, Bishop Young was elected and consecrated the 109th Bishop of the A.M.E. Church and was assigned to the 15th Episcopal District which embraces the southern part of the Republic of South Africa and the countries of Namibia and Angola; and,

WHEREAS, from 1996 to 2000, Bishop Young served as the Ecumenical and Urban Affairs Officer for the A.M.E. Church. He also served as the Endorsing Agent for all Chaplains in the denomination. During this period he provided leadership in all Ecumenical and Interfaith forums nationally and globally; and,

WHEREAS, Bishop Young served as the Presiding Bishop of the 10th Episcopal District in Texas from 2000-2004. During this period, Bishop Young chaired the Board of Trustees for Paul Quinn College; and,

WHEREAS, Bishop Young served as the Presiding Bishop of the 11th Episcopal District, overseeing Florida and the Bahamas Islands from 2004-2012 and chaired the Board of Trustees for Edward Waters College.
