Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and celebrate the Pittsburgh Summit Against Racism in their 18th year, and wishes to show our support for their initiatives and the great progress for equality that will be made; and, NOW, THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, January 23rd 2016 to be "Summit Against Racism Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Saturday, January 23rd 2016 marks the 18th annual Pittsburgh Summit Against Racism, a multicultural initiative of the Black & White Reunion and the Metro-Urban Institute gathering to call attention to our region’s continuing struggle in the fight against prejudice and racism; and,

 

WHEREAS, the conference will take place at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and will call together individuals and organizations from across the city and region with the goal of rededicating ourselves to the fight for equality and justice for all citizens regardless of the color of their skin or cultural background; and,

 

WHEREAS, the program for this year’s event includes many forums and discussions, covering such topics as art and culture, incarceration reform, community-police  relations, education reform, and residential segregation, all of which will be moderated by community members, reform advocates, local leaders, and a wide array of national activists; and,

 

WHEREAS, many local sponsors have come together to support the Summit and to show their support for the noble goals of the groups and individuals involved; and,
