Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim Tuesday, December 1, 2015 as "World AIDS Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

Body

WHEREAS, World AIDS Day is held on December 1 of each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against AIDS, to show their support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate people who have died from the disease; and,

 

WHEREAS, globally, there are an estimated 34 million people living with HIV. In the U.S., more than 1.2 million people are HIV positive, and there are 50,000 new infections diagnosed each year; and,

 

WHEREAS, approximately 3,000 people in Allegheny County are living with HIV and more than 20% of them are unaware of their status. HIV does not discriminate and it can infect and affect anyone; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Pitt Men’s Study is a confidential research study of the natural history of HIV/AIDS, funded by the National Institutes of Health at the University of Pittsburgh. The study has been ongoing in Pittsburgh since 1984, and has followed a cohort of approximately 3,000 men to gather information on the epidemiology, virology, immunology, and pathology of HIV; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Pitt Men’s Study is part of a national study, the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study <http://aidscohortstudy.org/>, and is led by medical and social scientists. It is part of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology in the Graduate School of Public Health of the University of Pittsburgh. The Pitt Men’s Study is proud to present the 28th annual World AIDS Day Commemoration on Tuesday, December 1, at Heinz Chapel.
