WHEREAS, named for two of Pittsburgh’s most celebrated talents in the last century-dancer Gene Kelly and composer Billy Strayhorn-the Kelly Strayhorn Theater (KST) is a destination for innovative works in dance, theater, music, and live art; and,
WHEREAS, Kelly Strayhorn Theater encourages diverse, inclusive, and high-quality, artistic, cultural, and educational activities through the Alloy School, artSEEDS student matinees, and artist residency programs. By nurturing these pursuits, KST contributes to cultural understanding, quality of life, and economic development in our community, county, city, and region; and,
WHEREAS, Kelly Strayhorn Theater uses the arts as a catalyst for community revitalization, and plays a key role in the transformation of East Liberty and nearby neighborhoods. In its 14th year as an organization, and eighth season of original programming, KST continues to demonstrate its commitment to Pittsburgh artists and audiences, supporting the presentation of risk-taking new work by emerging artists and arts organizations; and,
WHEREAS, On Saturday, November 28, KST will host Suite Life, the eighth annual celebration of the life and legacy of pianist, composer and KST namesake Billy Strayhorn-also marking the 100th anniversary of his birth; and,
WHEREAS, the evening is not only a celebration of Strayhorn’s catalogue, but a tribute to the continued influence of Strayhorn’s work on artists today. In an effort to ensure that Strayhorn’s work inspires generations yet to come, proceeds from Suite Life benefit the Strayhorn Legacy Fund, supporting youth and family programming at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim the Saturday, November 28, 2015 as “Kelly Strayhorn Day” in honor of Billy Strayhorn's 100th Birthday in the City of Pittsburgh.
