Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Margaret Smith Washington for her many contributions to the medical field; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, October 31, 2015, to be "Margaret Smith Washington Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Margaret Smith Washington grew up in Homewood and attended Westinghouse High School; and,

WHEREAS, Margaret received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Chatham College, her Master's Degree in Social Work Administration from the University of Pittsburgh and her Master's Degree in Medical and Hospital Administration from the University of Pittsburgh; and,

WHEREAS, Margaret worked for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center as a Clinical Administrator and Executive Director of the End Stage Renal Disease Network and was Director of Community Programs and Community Health Education at Mercy Hospital; and,

WHEREAS, Margaret also worked as Director of Training at the Homewood Brushton Neighborhood Health Center, Director of Ambulatory-Satellite Programs at Mercy Hospital, Consultant to the Maurice Falk Medical Fund and Director of Social Services at the Brushton Inner-City Encouragement Project; and,

WHEREAS, Margaret has a number of scholarly articles published on the topic of kidney transplantation and renal dialysis and is also the author of "Doctor, Can You Hear Me? Patient, Are You Listening", a self-published book; and,

WHEREAS, Margaret is a member of the American College of Hospital Administrators, the American Public Health Association, the National Association of Social Workers and the American Society of Minority Health and Transplant Professionals and a former member of the Governor's Renal Disease Advisory Committee; and,

WHEREAS, Margaret has served on the Board of the United Way of Allegheny County, Central Blood Bank of Pittsburgh, Urban League of Pittsburgh and the Trustee Board of the Rodman Street Missionary Baptist Church ; and,

WHEREAS, Margaret was named to "Who's Who in International Women", she has been honored with the Allegheny County Medical Society's Harold B. Gardner Award, was named "One of 25 Outstanding Black Women in Pittsburgh" by Talk Magazine, received the "Humanitarian Gift o...
