Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the commitment of Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, and the Allegheny County Library Association to encourage children and teens to choose reading. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare October 15, 2015 as, "Youth Literature Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, and the Allegheny County Library Association worked together to bring children's author Kate DiCamillo to Pittsburgh on October 15; and,

WHEREAS, Kate DiCamillo, the newly named National Ambassador for Young People's Literature for 2014-2015, is an award winning writer who believes that when we read together, we connect, and when we connect, we are changed. Kate's The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane was on the New York Times best-seller list, two of her books won the Newbery Medal, and her novel, The Tiger Rising, went on to become a National Book Award Finalist. Her latest novel, Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures, was a 2013 Parent's Choice Gold Award Winner and was chosen by Amazon, Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, and Commonsense Media as a Best Book of the Year selection; and,

WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures also named a Pittsburgh Ambassador for Youth Literature, local children's author Jonathan Auxier, who has been helping to spread the word about the importance of reading; and,

WHEREAS, by bringing a national figure for literacy like Kate to Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, and the Allegheny County Library Association are raising awareness about the importance of reading throughout the city; honoring the work of the parents, teachers, librarians, and after-school care providers who are so committed to reading to children and encouraging children to read independently; and,

WHEREAS, the event on Thursday, October 15th will be the culmination of a summer full of activities that promoted and encouraged reading among youth in Pittsburgh.
