WHEREAS, the month of October, 1995 was first recognized as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender History Month in order to enhance recognition of the contributions of gay and lesbian citizens throughout our Nation’s history; and,
WHEREAS, LGBT History Month is recognized and celebrated annually by the Federal government of the United States; and,
WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh is home to many LGBT citizens whom contribute to our community’s rich history through their work in the arts, education, science, politics, faith, health care, public service, and all other walks of life; and,
WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh’s commitment to inclusiveness and mutual respect dictates that all people, young or old, should feel safe to live, labor and to learn without the fear of discrimination and harassment, and all individuals, families and seniors should be free to live their lives with dignity and respect; and,
WHEREAS, a dedicated number of groups in Pittsburgh work year-round to promote understanding, acceptance, and equality for LGBT individuals, including the Gay and Lesbian Community Center, the PERSAD Center, New Voices Pittsburgh, Café Con Leche, Dreams of Hope, and many important others; and,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and celebrate the role that our LGBT residents have have played in enriching the culture and history of the City of Pittsburgh, and does hereby declare the month of October, 2015 to be LGBT History Month in the City of Pittsburgh.
