Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority (ALCOSAN) for outstanding service and programs for Allegheny County and its residents and congratulates ALCOSAN on its Award Winning Open House; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, September 19, 2015, to be " ALCOSAN DAY " in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, ALCOSAN, the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority, is located along the Ohio River on the Pittsburgh's Northside, and is one of the largest wastewater treatment facilities in the Ohio River Valley, providing wastewater treatment services to 83 communities including the City of Pittsburgh. Created in 1946 under the PA Municipal Authorities Act, its mission is to provide cost effective, customer oriented and environmentally conscious wastewater treatment that protects public health and enhances the use of our natural resources ; and,

WHEREAS, as an environmentally and technologically focused organization, and as a non-profit agency, ALCOSAN is funded solely by user fees with capital funds raised through the sale of sewer revenue bonds and recently completed a $400 million capital improvement program which addressed odor control, treatment capacity, solids handling and wet weather planning ; and,

WHEREAS, ALCOSAN is governed by a seven-member Board of Directors who oversee Customer Care, Scholastic Outreach and Education, Sewer Overflow Advisories, Wet Weather Issues and Pups4Clean Water as well as operational and management issues; and,

WHEREAS, ALCOSAN will hold the region's largest watershed and environmental festival with its Award-Winning Open House on September 19, 2015. It will feature guided tours of the treatment plant and laboratory, Microbiology and Watershed Life presentations, Orsanco's Aquarium, hands on environmental activities and exhibits, games food and fun..and a challenge with the Cleveland Wastewater Treatment organization to see who gets more people at their Open House.
