Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Sol Gross on his commitment to the POW/MIA effort and is proud to be a part of the national effort to remember our POWs and MIAs; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, September 18 , 2015, to be "NATIONAL POW/MIA RECOGNITION DAY " in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, in the United States, National POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed on the third Friday of September each year and this year will be observed on Friday, September 18, 2015 with an annual Vigil at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum in Oakland; and,

 

WHEREAS this annual event honors prisoners of war and the missing and their families and highlights the government’s commitment to account for them. It is observed throughout the United States by flying the POW/MIA flag and holding vigils and events to remember our POWs and MIAs from all wars ; and,   

 

WHEREAS, National POW/MIA Recognition Day was established to ensure that America remembers its responsibility to stand behind those who served our nation and do everything possible to account for those who did not return from conflicts; and,

 

WHEREAS, WWII POW and successful Pittsburgh businessman Sol Gross was instrumental in the original inception of this recognition as a National Holiday and has been a stalwart and steady proponent for recognizing our POWs/MIAs here in Pittsburgh for years.
