WHEREAS, September is Hunger Action Month; and,
WHEREAS, 14% of residents in Allegheny County are food insecure, 43,090 of whom are children; and,
WHEREAS, on average, 40% of food is wasted; translating to 20 pounds of food per person per month-totaling $165 billion dollars per year; and,
WHEREAS, 412 Food Rescue seeks to remedy this by working with food retailers, wholesalers, restaurants, caterers, universities, and other food providers to deliver un-sellable food to organizations that provide food for food-insecure families; and,
WHEREAS, 412 Food Rescue is a rapid response organization that utilizes technology and innovation to link food donors and recipients; and,
WHEREAS, 412 Food Rescue has amassed a vast network of volunteer food rescuers who donate their time and energy to move food between locations and improve food accessibility in our region; and,
WHEREAS, 412 Food Rescue has donated more than 80,000 pounds of food to more than 20 organizations; and,
WHEREAS, 412 Food Rescue founders Gisele Fetterman and Leah Lizarondo and project leader Jennifer England directly impact our community’s health and sustainability by cutting waste and relieving hunger.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend 412 Food Rescue for their commitment to creating a more just urban food system and improving community health; and,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare September 8, 2015 to be “412 Food Rescue Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
