Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and support PGH350 and the important work to which it is committed, and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare June 21, 2015 "Climate Action Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, PGH350, the new local affiliate of the national organization 350.org, is dedicated to building a global movement to slow and reverse carbon emissions and mitigate the impact of climate change; and,
 
WHEREAS, leading climate scientists from around the world agree that an atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) greater than 350 parts per million (ppm) poses a public health risk; and,
 
WHEREAS, recent measurements indicate that present concentrations of CO2 in the Earth's atmosphere exceed 400 ppm; and,
 
WHEREAS, 350.org has sponsored programs such as Moving Planet, which hosted more than 2,000 events in over 175 countries as a way to build support for policies that move the planet beyond fossil fuels; and,
 
WHEREAS, 350.org was a main organization behind the People's Climate March, which took place in September of 2014 in New York City and was the largest single climate march in history, with more than 400,000 participants rallying for action to address climate change; and,
 
WHEREAS, PGH350 seeks to engage local citizens and public officials in the region in the global movement against climate change by promoting awareness of the threats it poses to our health, our economy, and our existence and by advocating alternatives to the carbon-economy; and,
 
WHEREAS, PGH350 is holding a climate action rally on June 21, 2015-the date of the Summer Solstice-in East Park of the Allegheny Common to introduce itself to the city and to begin its work of building a local climate movement.
