Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, June 13, 2015, to be "German Singing Heritage Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, German immigration to Pennsylvania began in 1683, and many immigrants chose to settle in the Greater Pittsburgh area, where the influence of German culture is still prevalent today; and,
 
WHEREAS, in recognition of these immigrants and their descendants who founded several German Singing Societies, the Bloomfield Liedertafel of Pittsburgh will host the 52nd National Sängerfest of the Nord-Östlicher Sängerbund; a gathering of singing societies from across the country. Events will take place in Pittsburgh's Downtown and Bloomfield neighborhoods, from Friday, June 12th, through Sunday June 14th, 2015; and,
 
WHEREAS, 2015 is the first time that the triennial Sängerfest of the Nord-Östlicher Sängerbund will be held in Pittsburgh, home of the organization's National President, Nicholas Lipnichan of the Bloomfield Liedertafel; and,
 
WHEREAS, On Saturday, June 13th, at 4:00pm, a grand concert will be performed by the combined choirs of the Nord-Östlicher Sängerbund, a German Choral Organization founded in 1850 and comprised of twenty German language choirs from Washington D.C., Maryland, Delaware, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, with a total membership of over 650 singers, 150 of whom will make the journey to Pittsburgh. The concert will take place in the ballroom of the Wyndham Grand Hotel, and is free and open to the public; and,
 
WHEREAS, the choruses of the Nord-Östlicher Sängerbund have played an integral part in our nation's history and have performed at the dedication of the National Cemetery at Gettysburg, at which Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address, and later at President Lincoln's funeral.
