Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh honors Florence Wasler for a life well lived, and a legacy of hope, strength and grace. We honor her memory and convey our most sincere sympathies to the Wasler family and, our special thoughts and prayers to Philip and Linda Johnson Wasler, Florence's son and daughter-in-law, the former City Clerk, both of whom exemplify the values they learned from Florence and Howard Wasler.

WHEREAS, Florence V. Wasler was born on September 22, 1916, in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, daughter of Lockwood and Rita Hughes. On Thursday, May 14, 2015, at the age of ninety-eight, Florence peacefully went to her eternal rest in heaven, leaving a legacy of love, kindness and care; and,
WHEREAS, during World War II, Florence worked at the U.S. Bureau of Engraving in Washington, D.C. proofreading communications between the United States and other nations. She studied music at Howard University with noted violinists Louia Vaughn Jones and Leo Bartolli. Florence had a life-long love of the violin and played in concerts near and far, including the Pittsburgh Civic Symphony. She was a founding member of the Washington Symphony Orchestra and featured as one of the Outstanding Women of Washington by Washington & Jefferson College; and,
WHEREAS, Florence Hughes, moved to Washington, Pennsylvania, married, Howard Wasler and, together, in 1947, they opened Howard Wasler Flower Shop. Howard also served three-terms as a Council Member in Washington, PA. Their successful efforts endured and the floral shop is still in business today. It enjoys a well-deserved reputation for its quality and care. As a customer once said, they "put their heart and soul into everything they do"; and,
WHEREAS, Florence Wasler, had four loves in her life; her family, her faith, music, and her beloved flower shop, where counseling, poetry and unconditional kindness was given freely to all who entered the shop. Her wisdom was sought by many, serving on the board of directors of the Washington Symphony Orchestra, Mental Health Association, Council of Three Rivers American Indian Center, Pittsburgh Indian Center and PNC Bank's advisory board; and,
WHEREAS, Florence Wasler, was the beloved mother of seven children, H. Lockwood "Buz", Lyle, Gregory, Florence, Alison, Mark and Philip. Florence and Howard's values live on in them and their ten grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; two great-...
