Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Better-Maid Donut Company for their commitment to the City of Pittsburgh, District 2, and its loyal customers; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, June 5, 2015, to be "Better-Maid Donut Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, in honor of National Doughnut Day, Friday, June 5, 2015, we would like to recognize the Better-Maid Donut Company; and,
 
WHEREAS, in 2003, brothers Al and Ken Smith purchased Better-Maid Donut Company, located on Steuben Street in Crafton Heights, known to locals as the "Pink Donut Shop" and known to regulars as the place for the best doughnuts; and,  
 
WHEREAS, the brothers grew up eating Better-Maid doughnuts, also known as Pink House doughnuts, as they worked delivering newspapers as kids; and,                       
 
WHEREAS, naturally, when they heard that their childhood donut shop was for sale, they bought the shop and Ken Smith, who previously worked in the food industry, learned to make the doughnuts from the previous owner; and,
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith begins work at 8:30 p.m. making donuts for the next morning, making everything by hand, moving between the small fryer and the counter, where he frosts and fills his masterpieces; and,
 
WHEREAS, on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, this icon in the community was damaged when a van crashed through the side of the shop, wounding two customers and nearly hitting the owner, Ken Smith; and,
 
WHEREAS, Al is no longer involved in the business but graces the doughnut box in cartoon form, and the loyal customers are awaiting their return as the owner of the building is contemplating rebuilding; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Better-Maid Donut Company for their commitment to the City of Pittsburgh, District 2, and its loyal customers; and,
