WHEREAS, each year in cities across the United States, too many members of our families and communities are lost to senseless and preventable gun violence; and,
WHEREAS, in recognition of the value of human life and in remembrance of those lost, Tuesday, June 2nd, 2015, has been named the first annual National Gun Violence Awareness Day; and,
WHEREAS, all across the country, civic leaders, organizations, businesses, and general citizens of all stripes are standing up to support additional efforts to fight gun violence by choosing to wear orange, as part of the nationwide Wear Orange campaign; and,
WHEREAS, special recognition should be given to CeaseFirePA, in tandem with Everytown for Gun Safety, leading gun violence prevention organizations here in the City of Pittsburgh and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for promoting this event locally; and,
WHEREAS, wearing orange is only the first step in this fight, while "becoming orange" by embracing the value of life and seriously pushing for real gun reforms is the true goal of this nationwide effort; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend the efforts of the Wear Orange campaign, and urges all Pittsburghers to take part; and,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, June 2nd, 2015, to be "National Gun Violence Awareness Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
