Body
WHEREAS, the Carriage House Children's Center was founded in 1974 by Natalie Kaplan and began as a full-day child-care program for 3- and 4-year-olds on Chatham College's campus; and,

WHEREAS, in 1980, when Wightman School, a pillar of the Squirrel Hill community, closed, the neighborhood was devastated; and,

WHEREAS, following Wightman School's closure, the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition conducted a community-needs assessment, which exposed a lack of infant and toddler care in the area. Carriage House responded by opening an infant-care program at Wightman School, the first of its kind in the area; and,

WHEREAS, the Wightman School Community Building was transformed by Carriage House, and for the last 40 years, the Carriage House Children's Center has left their mark not only on Squirrel Hill but the greater Pittsburgh community; and,

WHEREAS, to this day, Carriage House offers a varied and flexible child-care program that emphasizes the importance of each child as a unique and valued person; and,

WHEREAS, to celebrate their 40th anniversary, the Carriage House Children's Center will be hosting a range of events, including an open house celebration on May 16th that invites all Carriage House families, current and long graduated, to reminisce, meet former friends, and see how the building has changed and grown.
