Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, supports our Nepali and Bhutanese neighbors during this difficult time, and encourages concerned citizens to donate to these remarkable organizations; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare May 5, 2015, to be "Nepali Earthquake Relief Giving Day" in the City of Pittsburgh and encourages all neighbors to contribute to the relief of those who are suffering.

WHEREAS, on April 25, 2015, the country of Nepal was hit with a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, devastating individuals, families, and entire communities in Nepal, while under-resourced aid workers struggle to meet the needs of those impacted by the earthquake; and,

WHEREAS, search, rescue, and recovery efforts in Nepal are ongoing, as exhausted first responders sift through the rubble of damaged homes and buildings, while families continue to sleep in the open air for safety as the aftershocks continue; and,

WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh region is home to a vibrant community of Nepalese and Bhutanese-Nepalese immigrants who have organized to help the victims of the earthquake by raising money to save lives and provide shelter, food, and water to survivors; and,

WHEREAS, the Nepalese Community of Greater Pittsburgh is asking the Pittsburgh community to unite and consider giving to one of five vetted organizations which are currently on the ground and can provide immediate relief for those who are injured and suffering; and,

WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Nepalese Community has created a webpage for individuals to donate through MercyCorps that will focus on responding to the disaster by attending to the immediate needs of those in Nepal, like food, water, and shelter; and,

WHEREAS, the American Nepal Medical Foundation, a volunteer organization aimed at advancing medical training and practice in Nepal, is collecting funds that will be sent directly to local hospitals and victims; and,

WHEREAS, Brother's Brother Foundation, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit, has partnered with Himalayan HealthCare, based in Nepal, to channel donations toward needed supplies and aid in reconstruction efforts; and,

WHEREAS, Oxfam America has created a Nepal Earthquake Relief and Recovery Fund, which supports Oxfam aid workers who are on the ground, providing clean water, latrines, and emergency shelters to people who can't return to their damaged homes; and,
